What Can Grey Water Do For You?

February 11th, 2011 Comments off

Grey WaterWhen grey water is mentioned, it often times receives a negative connotation. Grey water, by definition, is wastewater that is generated from activities done around the house, including bathing, dishwashing and laundry.

What a lot of people don’t know is that grey water – even containing hair, grease or food – can be recycled for landscape irrigation and other environmentally sound purposes. Recycled grey water not only reduces the amount of wastewater that enters sewer systems but also reduces the amount of freshwater that is needed for the good of a home.

Grey water gets its name from having a cloudy look. Fresh water is known as white water, while sewage water is known as black water. Grey water basically is capable of composing as much as 80 percent of all residential wastewater generated from the sanitation unit of a home, sans the toilets. Grey water can be used for lawn care or for watering maturing plants and produce.

Grey water may not be drinkable, but it’s definitely usable. Let our Fort Worth TX plumbers answer all of your questions about the benefits of grey water. Feel free to give our Fort Worth plumbing company a call today, or visit us online for information.

Reducing Ring Around the Toilet

Rings around the rosie, on your index finger and in a Krispy Kreme deep-fryer vat–good.
Ring around the toilet–not so much. toilet-brush-ben franklin plumbing birmingham

So what exactly causes that persistent and recurring ring around the water line of your toilet? More importantly, can you get rid of it permanently?

The short answer is salt (or “alkali” deposits to be chemically specific). The brown line is actually the salt residue that remains after the organic deposits have been flushed and the hard water in the bowl starts to evaporate.

Can you remove the ring permanently? Not likely. But the most effective and enduring solution is pouring one to two cups of white vinegar into your toilet bowl on a monthly basis. The hard part is making sure you don’t scratch the bowl. Use only soft nylon bristles to scrub the inside of the toilet bowl once the deposits are softened. Also, be sure to follow the preventive maintenance tips for toilets discussed in the previous post to lessen the toilet wear-and-tear.

If you continue to have problems with removing the toilet ring–or even end up damaging the toilet, give us a call at 817-349-7130 24/7 and we’ll be there to help.

Preventative Maintenance for Toilets

October 7th, 2010 Comments off

ToiletWith proper care and occasional maintenance, a toilet can last a long time…a lifetime in fact. If you have a really old toilet that is using water like there’s no tomorrow, you may want to contact your trusted Fort Worth TX plumber to discuss the installation of a new, low-flow toilet. If your current throne meets your needs, however, the following tips – courtesy of the commode experts at www.toiletology.com – will help you get the most out of your comfort station:

  • Be extra careful when using tools around your toilet. The simple task of replacing a toilet’s internal flushing system may lead to a cracked bowl; a cracked bowl is the kiss of death for your toilet.
  • Take care when handling the toilet lid. When you have to remove it, use both hands; lids are heavy and slippery.
  • Don’t use your toilet as a ladder.
  • Replace your toilet bowl cleaning brush as soon as the bristles wear down to the metal. Using a worn brush can scratch your toilet bowl. Scratches cannot be repaired.
  • Only place flushable toilet paper in your toilet. Gum, paper towels, diapers and bandages don’t belong in there and may lead to clogs.
